What's Next For Accounting? - Issue #149

Swipe this AI usage policy

Your firm needs an AI usage policy.

Those high schoolers using ChatGPT to write their essays? There’s a reason they’re doing so. It’s the best tool for the job.

A good AI usage policy ensures you can put the best AI tools into the hands of your team to do their jobs.

I worked with RightWorks on a policy you can swipe for free and tailor to your needs, but here’s the most important bit:

You’re going to pair approved apps, with approved use-cases, according to data sensitivity.

Putting together marketing materials? Any old AI assistant will do.

Plugging sensitive client data into the tool? Only the most secure solutions will do.

And because researching every AI assistant under the sun is a pile of work, check out this table comparing all the major AI assistants, their security, data retention policies etc. Even subscribe to the table for updates if there’s an important change.

I went

deeper on how to roll it out in a firm in this video, and original explored this framework for data protection in greater depth here.

🔮 Q&A

How do you price the different tiers (bronze, silver, gold) on your proposal? Link
Two strategies via Geraldine Carter via Jonathan Stark: the "Might as Well" curve and the Goldilocks curve. The "Might as Well" curve push clients to choose the top tier by making the price delta between middle and top smaller than between lower tiers. The Goldilocks curve creates a significantly higher-priced top tier. This drives most to the middle option, but has the benefit of occasionally leading to pricing breakthroughs when a prospect chooses the top option. These breakthroughs cause you to rethink who you’re serving, and how much you’re able to charge.

How do we rescope our engagements when something comes up that was unknowable? Link
I’m increasingly convinced all things are knowable with the proper process. Two accountants will have wildly different capabilites when it comes to scoping work. Why is that? Oftentimes it’s experience. One has seen some things. But consider how you can institutionalize seen things. Checklists of what to look out for, and review processes 12 months later to add things you missed. No system will be 100% complete, but your system is something that can be continuously developed over time, becoming an asset long-term.
